SS17 Trend: Embroidery
As we know it, florals couldn’t be any less groundbreaking for spring/summer, but this season designers from Gucci to Ashish have been enhancing the flower and other simple motifs into lavishly extravagant pieces of embroidery to adorn their designs. Most designers seem to have opted for pastel colours, adhering to traditional spring/summer expectations. Jason Wu exuberantly used embroidery, covering the outfit in a small, gentle design, one with both intricacy and elegance. Alike to Gucci using embroidery on a much larger scale, Huishan Zhang took a bolder approach opting to embellish bigger 3D pieces in a more dispersed manor, creating more of a dramatic impact. Altuzarra’s use of the pineapple motif embroidered repeatedly against a cool blue maxi dress instantly creates a chilled summer vibe.

Embroidery on the highstreet is diverse, appearing on varying styles and silhouettes. Opt for faded embroidered colours harmonised with distressed denim for a casual vibe or a mesh adorned with delicate embroidered shapes for a more dressed up affair. Lots of small dainty embroidered shapes cohere prettily with a background print of stripes whilst the elegance of floral embroidery harmonises gently with ruffles and frills.
